Local chef continues his quest to bring haute cuisine within local home chefs’ reach.
In the six months since Chef David Jamrock opened his Culinary Arts Center in Hollister, he has gone from doing regularly scheduled cooking classes—demonstrating how to prepare everything from Beef Bourguignon to Thai Pineapple Fried Rice—to pop-up events at Crave, including an upcoming paring celebrating the 50th anniversary of Calera Wine Company. He’s now offering Christmas-themed classes.
Celebrity chef holds cooking classes in Hollister
During his career as a celebrity chef, David Jamrock has palled around with the stars, sharing a behind-the-kitchen smoke with Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr., serving up banquets for Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan (who was joined by then-vice president George Bush), took in a post-dinner hottub with Sylvester Stallone and had his favorite pizza chef hired away from him by Sonny Bono.
Starting in the business when he was just 15 years old, Jamrock has worked in restaurants coast to coast, sometimes for himself, sometimes coming in to reorganize and launch new operations for others before moving on to his next project.
“There is a lot more than food to being an executive chef,” he said. “You have two to three hundred customers. You have to be able to manage every part of the experience, and you have to make everyone happy in every situation.” READ MORE
BenitoLink August 7, 2014 Featuring Chef Dave's Edible Garden
One of the hottest culinary trends this summer, edible flowers, has a local champion in David Jamrock, the chef behind the sumptuous farm dinners at a downtown garden in Gilroy.
Yet, while it took the influence of Food Network cooking programs to get people to try rose petals on their cupcakes and lavender in their lamb roasts, Jamrock, a professional chef who once fed ’50s-era Hollywood Glitterati and United States Presidents at a high-end resort in Palm Springs, has been cooking with and growing edible flowers at his Hollister ranch for years.
“I had wild elderberries and peppercorns growing on the property that I would pick for a restaurant. About six years ago they asked if I could plant some marigolds and it steamrolled from there,” said Jamrock recently during some unusual downtime.
In addition to planning and executing the alfresco feasts at the Gilroy Demonstration Garden, Jamrock sells at the destination farmers market at the Ferry Building in San Francisco and grows about 25 different varieties of edible flowers at his ranch near Lover’s Lane in Hollister. READ MORE
